Title: Kinyarwanda Language Specialist
Project: Rwanda Soma Umenye
Project Summary
Soma Umenye will work to improve reading outcomes in Kinyarwanda for at least 1 million children in public and government-aided sc
hools in Rwanda by the end of P3. Specifically, Soma Umenye will target all children in Grades 1-3 attending public and government-aided schools nationwide and ensure that at least 70 percent of students are able to read grade-level text with fluency and comprehension by the end of Grade 3.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under the DDG of CMPD liaise with REB counterparts from CPMD to design and development of effective Kinyarwanda-language teaching and learning materials.
  • Pilots and evaluates teaching and learning materials developed for Kinyarwanda instruction.
  • Designs interactive teaching aids, including those that are not printed, to supplement printed materials.
  • Evaluates Kinyarwanda curriculum and teaching methodology.
  • Actively participates in research aimed at improving the quality of Kinyarwanda curriculum and teaching and learning materials.
  • Collaborates with Early Grade Reading Advisor to incorporate best practices in reading teaching methodology, curriculum, and material development.
  • Conduct other duties as assigned by the DDG of CPMD.
Job Qualifications
  • 5-10 years of experience strengthening teacher professional development among primary grade teachers (experience with primary teachers preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of African Languages, with relevant experience to teaching or curriculum development. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must have prior experience working with REB, MINEDUC, and/or regional TTCs
  • Experience working with international development sector organizations and/or donor agencies is preferred.
  • Familiarity with USAID Education Strategy and associated documents (Technical Notes, Implementation Guidance, and Reference Materials), preferred
  • Experience promoting equity in learning outcomes among boys, girls, and children with special needs preferred;
  • Familiarity with the Rwandan education sector is required.
  • Demonstrated exemplary diplomatic, communication, and interpersonal skills as well as versatility and integrity.
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English and Kinyarwanda
Level of Effort and Location of Assignment
One year renewable.
The Kinyarwanda Languages Specialist will report directly to the DDG of CMPD and will have coordination responsibilities to the Chief of Party of Some Umenye on a regular basis to support the REBs ongoing efforts in effective Kinyarwanda material development.
This position would begin in no later than January of 2017.
