We provide farmers with a "market bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure more than 100% average gain in farm income per acre.  We are growing quickly. In seven years, the Rwanda program has grown to serve over 200,000 farm families with more than 1,000 full-time field staff.
Job Description
The Innovations team runs trials on promising products and services that have the potential to be included in TUBURA’s regular product line. Trials run by the innovations department have resulted in a long list of additions to our Core program: new types of fertilizer, seed, planting techniques, farmer training materials, and household products like solar panels and cook stoves. To help manage this growth, we are looking for an “Innovation Data Manager” at our Headquarters Office to deliver high quality trial analyses of innovations team through strong data management and sound analysis.
Duties and responsibilities
  • Preparation of Data Collection Tools
    • Produce excellent data collection tools in Excel
    • Produce excellent tablet surveys using Commcare Software (training available)
    • Help both with content revision, structuring of questions in the best way, and translations between English and Kinyarwanda
    • Assist with field testing and revisions of surveys prior to roll-out with the field team
    • Advise on trial design and methodology to ensure that trial will lead to clear and confident results
  • Database Management and data cleaning
    • Ensure excellent organization of all databases, and ensure easy access to the updated versions
    • Conduct systematic data cleaning – consistent identification of possible errors or outliers to be followed up on
    • Guide data audit team in conducting systematic data audits in the field, guaranteeing data quality from the moment of collection.
    • After analyzing a given data set, organize a list of common errors found by enumerators and share this with their Managers for performance management purposes
    • Advice on data quality improvements: providing guidance and input to our Innovation team to improve data collection methods, developing tools and resources that can identify data quality problems, and implementing best practices for data accuracy.
    • Organize data at the end of a trial and do a final round of cleaning
  • Assist with team training and field oversight
    • As needed, assist the Field Director of your projects to train the field team in how to properly implement surveys
    • Write and implement trainings occasionally on data quality and data analysis for other team members
    • Visit the field roughly 1 time per week to observe implementation of the surveys or trial data collection (requires some travel to other regions)
    • In the field, assist the Officers and Managers to better understand the data collection tool, identify any errors they might be making, and help to correct them
  • Data Analysis and Preparation of Reports
    • Prepare and present the most compelling results tables (with statistical significance, if appropriate) and graphics to answer the key questions of the survey + any other lessons uncovered during analysis
    • Perform advanced statistical analyses on data where necessary (ANOVA, regressions, other statistical analyses)
    • Generate new variables from raw data, as needed for analysis
    • Refer to the Impact model(s) related to the content of the survey and provide suggestions for how to modify it (inserting new values, changing the structure) based on your results.
    • Write a first-draft textual interpretation of results for most of the trials that you analyze
Requirements
  • At least two years of relevant professional experience (health, agriculture, project management)
  • Excellent data management and analysis skill
  • Practical experience with data analysis, ideally with agricultural data
  • Fluency in Microsoft Excel, specifically: Ability to design basic data-entry spreadsheets in “database format” such as  Ability to extract summary statistics using both Pivot Tables and Excel formulae
  • Language: Kinyarwanda and English required in all locations.
  • Strong communication skills
Desired (please highlight in your CV)
  • University Graduate: Degree in sciences (Agriculture or  Statistics strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with data analysis programs (SPSS, Stata, R, Web-based survey program such as CommCare)
  • Practical experience writing and/or implementing surveys for field data collection
  • Understanding of basic practices in experimental design concepts
