Job overview:
The Pediatric specialist will serve to provide specialty clini
cal teaching, support hospital leadership to implement clinical services, provide Neonatology and child health programmatic technical advice to the MCH Director and clinical mentoring to clinical staff. He/she will help maintain high quality clinical services at all levels of the district health system in accordance with Ministry of Health norms in the area of neonatal and child health.
Key responsibilities and /Expected deliverables:
  • Capacity Building in nursing and physician care delivery at PIH supported hospitals
a.   Build the systems that ensure clinical care is of reasonable standard via:
  • Real time capacity/skills building on rounds
  • Real time instruction of providers to improve protocol and standards based adherence
  • Creation of centralized documents and resources that pertain to facility based pediatric practice in Rwanda
  • Initiation of continuous professional development activities for general practioners.
b. Support creation and implementation of quality improvement projects in partnership with MCH mentors and other MOH staff.
c. Ensure that equipment and drug lists respond to the needs of acutely and chronically ill children in emergency ward, in–patient and out­patients services
  • Overseeing quality of care and management of Neonatal care units: Supporting MCH mentors to implement Neonatology trainings and other pediatric-focused trainings at hospital/HC level.
  • Providing technical support to the MCH director:
a. Provide technical advice on IMB MCH programs activities, including but not limited to grant writing, program design and implementation, quality improvement, training, mentorship, pharmacy and supply chain, monitoring and evaluation, operational research, and fund-raising, with a specific focus on PDC (Pediatric development Clinic) and SLAB.
  • Providing direct supervision and mentorship to the Head PDC and Pediatrician fellows.
  • Providing on-going technical advice, protocol/training support to any other program with pediatric needs such as pediatric oncology.
  • Identify and work with the MCH Director on any potential research projects in the pediatric domain
  • In addition to reporting to the Dep CMO, all hospital-based and clinical activities will be dually reported to the Hospital Administration (Medical Director or designate, including Medical Chief of Staff, Nursing Chief of Staff, Line Managers).
  • Programmatic and research activities will be conducted under the supervision and collaboration of the MCH Director.
  • Medical doctor with Pediatric specialty training with at least 3 years post-graduate experience in global health (Provision of care and service quality improvement in resource limited setting).
  • Technical expertise in pediatrics, neonatology, nutrition, early childhood development, adolescent health, quality improvement sciences, teaching/training, and operational research
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of the field of global health and neonatal and child health globally.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with experience in working in diverse professional contexts
  • Proven commitment to social justice and ability to live and work in a rural setting
  • Fluency in English is required; French and Kinyarwanda are preferred
